How We Rank
Every restaurant on the Hot Restaurant List is scored using a proprietary algorithm that weighs six key factors. Here's what goes into the ranking.
Rating
Aggregate ratings from major review platforms. The most universal signal of restaurant quality, reflecting the collective experience of thousands of diners.
Foot Traffic
Real-world popularity measured by how many people actually walk through the door. People vote with their feet. That signal matters.
Trending Momentum
Week-over-week changes in interest and demand. This keeps our list dynamic. Rising restaurants get recognized before they become mainstream.
Michelin Recognition
Stars from the Michelin Guide carry significant weight. But they don't dominate. Most of the best restaurants in America aren't Michelin-starred, and our algorithm reflects that.
James Beard Awards
The James Beard Foundation recognizes excellence across a broader spectrum than Michelin. That includes regional gems, rising stars, and outstanding restaurants nationwide.
Price Accessibility
We believe great food exists at every price point. Our algorithm gives a slight edge to accessible restaurants. A perfect taco stand deserves to rank alongside fine dining.
The Algorithm
Each factor is scored independently and combined using proprietary weights to produce a single Hot Score. Restaurants are then ranked 1–100 within each city by descending score. The exact weights are not disclosed, but every factor listed above contributes meaningfully to the final ranking.
Rankings are recalculated weekly to reflect changes in foot traffic, trending momentum, and new award recognitions. A restaurant that was #50 last week can rise to #10 this week if the data supports it.
Our Philosophy
We built the Hot Restaurant List because rankings should be driven by data, not opinions. Our algorithm treats a packed taco stand with the same rigor as a three-Michelin-star tasting menu. If people love it, the data shows it, and the industry recognizes it. It belongs on the list.
