Phoenix has been one of the more competitive markets we track, so a new top-10 entry carries extra weight there. Eater covers Phoenix's restaurant scene closely, and the city's dining energy has been consistently high. Tratto crashing in at #7 isn't a fluke. It's a signal.
The Top-10 Club Had a Busy Week
Tratto wasn't the only newcomer this week. Four other restaurants broke into their respective city top 10s, and that kind of simultaneous movement across multiple markets is worth pausing on.
Grey Ghost climbed into Detroit's top 10 at #8. Travail Kitchen and Amusements did the same in Minneapolis, also landing at #8. In Tampa, Reading Room arrived at #8 as well. And in Boston, Oleana settled into #9. Five top-10 breakthroughs in a single week. That's a lot of restaurants earning new trust from a lot of diners at once.
Oleana is a particularly interesting one to watch. The James Beard Foundation has long recognized restaurants in the Oleana orbit and its entry into Boston's top 10 feels like a restaurant that's been quietly excellent finally getting its due in the numbers.
Atlanta Had a Rough Week and Nobody Was Spared
While restaurants were ascending elsewhere, Atlanta's upper tier took a collective bruise. BoccaLupo fell 9 spots to #11. Umi dropped 9 to land at #14. Poor Calvin's slid 9 to #29. Three restaurants, same drop, same week. That's not coincidence. That's a market-level shift.
When you see synchronized drops like this, it usually means something external is affecting the whole city's dining behavior rather than individual restaurants underperforming. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution food section would be worth watching for any local context here. Whether it's a seasonal pattern, a calendar factor, or something else entirely, Atlanta's data is flagging something worth monitoring into next week.
Denver had its own faller. Olive & Finch dropped 10 spots to #95, the single steepest fall we tracked this week. That's a significant slide for a restaurant that had been holding solid positioning.
Portuguese Is the Cuisine to Know Right Now
Hottest cuisine this week: Portuguese. Averaging +2.3 spots across three restaurants, it's the kind of movement that stands out when most of the broader market is trending downward. Overall, 1,548 restaurants fell this week versus 514 that climbed. Portuguese was swimming upstream hard.
Saveur has done some of the best longform writing on Portuguese food's American moment, and the data is now rhyming with the cultural attention the cuisine has been getting. Whether this is a one-week spike or the start of a sustained run, we'll be watching the numbers closely.
That broader downward pressure in the market is worth noting. Last week's post on fine dining holding while the middle gets squeezed touched on some of these forces already. The overall numbers this week. 514 up, 1,548 down, 638 flat. suggest that gravity is still very much in charge for most restaurants. The climbers are climbing against real resistance.
Michelin-starred restaurants weren't immune either. The Michelin Guide tracks its starred restaurants globally, but our data shows 82 starred restaurants fell this week against only 33 that rose. Even prestige doesn't insulate you from a tough week in the numbers.
Denver Is Also Quietly Building Something
It would be easy to look at Olive & Finch's drop and write Denver off this week. Don't. Elway's climbed 7 spots to #18, Welton Street Cafe gained 6 to reach #60, and Andreoli Italian Grocer had a strong showing in Phoenix as well. Denver is showing both the highs and lows of a market in real motion. Thrillist's Denver dining coverage has been calling the city a sleeper for a while now. The data is starting to back that up.
Super Cocina also deserves a mention, climbing 7 spots to #53 in San Diego. One of the more beloved cheap-eats institutions in the city, it's not the kind of restaurant that usually makes the top-climbers list. When it does, diners are speaking clearly. Serious Eats has written extensively about what makes regional Mexican cooking like Super Cocina's so hard to replicate, and this week's jump suggests San Diego diners know exactly what they have.
One to Watch: Elway's in Denver
Elway's is sitting at #18 in Denver after a 7-spot jump this week, and the trajectory here is hard to ignore. Seven spots in a single week is significant movement for a restaurant already inside the top 20. If this momentum holds, a top-10 conversation becomes very real, very fast.
