So let's talk about what's moving, what's sliding, and who's about to do something interesting.
Atlanta Just Had a Rough One
The numbers don't lie, and Atlanta's numbers are ugly right now. BoccaLupo dropped 9 spots to sit at #11. Umi fell the same 9 spots, landing at #14. Poor Calvin's slid 9 as well, down to #29. Three of the five biggest fallers this week are Atlanta restaurants, and they all dropped by the exact same margin. That's not a coincidence. That's a city recalibrating.
It's worth noting that none of these are bad restaurants. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has covered all three as serious players in a genuinely deep dining scene. But when a city's top restaurants fall in lockstep, it usually means the restaurants climbing around them are getting sharper, louder, or both. We'll be watching Atlanta closely. See where things stand now before the rankings shift again.
Phoenix Is Having a Moment
While Atlanta cools, Phoenix is running hot. Proof Canteen jumped 8 spots to #77. Andreoli Italian Grocer climbed 7 to reach #72. And Tratto broke into the city's top 10, now sitting at #7. That's three Phoenix restaurants making real noise in a single week.
Phoenix has been building quietly for a while. Eater has been tracking the city's dining evolution for years, and weeks like this one are exactly why. It doesn't feel like a fluke. It feels like a scene that's been stacking up talent and is finally getting the signal boost it deserves. We called out Pizzeria Bianco at the top of the Phoenix rankings just last week, and now the whole city seems to be in motion.
Portuguese Is Still Portuguese
For the third week running, Portuguese cuisine is the hottest thing on our boards. Average gain of +2.3 spots across three restaurants this week. That's not a trend anymore. That's a pattern. We've been tracking this since early April, and it keeps compounding. Saveur has long championed Portuguese cooking as one of the most underrated cuisines in the world, and American diners are apparently catching up in real time.
Honolulu, which has its own Portuguese culinary history thanks to generations of immigration, clocked an average gain of +0.1 spots across its ranked restaurants this week. A small number, but meaningful given how broadly the rest of the country fell. The connection between Honolulu and Portuguese food isn't accidental, and it's becoming one of the more interesting storylines we're following on this site.
New Faces in the Top 10
Five restaurants broke into their city's top 10 this week. Grey Ghost in Detroit climbed to #8. Travail Kitchen and Amusements in Minneapolis hit #8 as well. Reading Room in Tampa arrived at #8 just as Acropolis Greek Taverna was falling out of favor, dropping 10 spots to #79. And Oleana in Boston landed at #9. Bon Appétit once named Oleana one of the most important restaurants in America. That reputation is apparently still earning interest.
The Michelin picture deserves a mention here too. The Michelin Guide carries enormous weight in how diners think about quality, but this week 95 starred restaurants dropped in our rankings while only 34 climbed. Stars don't guarantee momentum. The market moves on its own terms.
One to Watch: Elway's, Denver
Elway's jumped 7 spots this week, landing at #18 in Denver. It's a steakhouse with a legacy and a name that still means something in that city, and right now it's moving in the right direction with real conviction. Welton Street Cafe also climbed 6 spots to #60, which is a good sign for Denver overall. But Elway's at #18 and trending hard is the one to bookmark. At this pace, a top-10 appearance isn't a stretch. It's a matter of when, not if.
Denver's picture is mixed. Olive & Finch fell 10 spots this week, the joint-biggest drop in the country alongside Acropolis. But Food & Wine has written about Denver's dining scene as one of the country's most unpredictable, and weeks like this one prove the point. The city is reshuffling its deck, and Elway's is holding a strong hand.
Come back next week. If Elway's keeps this up, we'll have a new top-10 story to tell. Check the full rankings anytime in the meantime.
